Ethans’s Blog #3

The assignment that was put forward was to complete an interview involving some sort of adversity or controversy while using b-roll in the interview. The strategies that I had come up with to tackle this was to try are best to get all of our b-roll before the next class as well as our interview hopefully finished.

The initial idea that I came up with was to interview my roommate Jayden Lee who recently had broken his collarbone which ended up ending his season early. I thought this was a great idea as it would certainly add a great story line with lots to talk about.

This initial idea was what we decided to stick with as we thought it was too good of a story to pass up on.

The project timeline looked like us filming are interview and most of our b-roll. I was hoping to get it all done but for some reason my partner didn’t want to stay for the extra 20 minutes so we only got some of it. In the following class we were able to get our interview figured out and finished that halfway through class and I was hoping to start adding the b-roll in, but my partner decided that he would rather wait until after the break was over. Because of the corona virus we weren’t able to get all of our b-roll done which led to me having to do the rest of the project on my own while finding my own b-roll from previous games as well as contacting Jayden for photos that I would put into the interview. Once I received all of the b-roll I ended up putting the rest of the project together on my own and thought I put together some very intriguing b-roll.

I would say I had to rely on Jayden for some photos after the corona virus outbreak considering we were really lacking on the b-roll, so he was a big help for that.

The challenges that arose were obviously the corona virus considering it limited what type of b-roll we had as well as actually having the ability to use adobe premiere at first. I was able to address this problem by downloading it the following week and finishing up the project. Another problem I faced was the fact my partner had none of the necessary resources that were needed for this class like a hard drive for example. This meant that once the corona virus incident happened, he wasn’t able to help with the rest of the project, and I was on my own for all the b-roll and editing. I rose through this challenge by putting countless hours towards the editing and b-roll of this project.

I thought the b-roll ended up going very well as I was able to add a video of the actual play that Jayden broke his collarbone at.

`           The once obvious unforeseen circumstance that made me have to adapt my plans was the corona virus shutting down the school which led there to be no more classes as well as the inability to access adobe premiere.

The one thing I would have done differently was to utilize are class time and film time so that we wouldn’t have been lacking the appropriate amount of a-roll and b-roll.

Overall, I really enjoyed these first three projects and although am sad I won’t be able to continue to use the cameras I am looking forward to the vlogs that are coming up.

What does the recovery time look like?
How do you plan to make this a positive moving forward?

The assignment that was put forward was to do an interview between 120-180 seconds with a person of our choice while setting up the proper set for the interview.

Some of the initial ideas that came forward for me was to get Skyler Brindamour as our interviewer as he has a very interesting story with his father being a former Stanley cup winner and current coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. As well Skyler brought a very interesting story knowing he is going through his first year of college hockey and school and getting an understanding of that would be very interesting to discover.

From our initial ideas it was really between interviewing Charlotte roommate and Skyler and what we made our decision off of was what would make a more interesting interview and we decided that Skyler story had the possibility of making a great interview.

The project timeline was honestly something that went by pretty smoothly. After deciding on who we were going to interview which only took a few minutes we decided that Sunday would be the best day to film as both of us had no classes and I had no hockey on that day. After that I was able to arrange a time that worked with Skyler and we would all meet at 12pm at the communication building. We were able to get set up in around 45 minutes as we had a little bit of trouble with the lights but were able to figure it out. After that we filmed a couple of times and then would edit our work at the next class. Once done editing we were finished making our interview and were super excited to share it the next class.

We did have to rely on Skyler as without him we wouldn’t have been able to do the interview, so we were super grateful for his help.

A few challenges that arose throughout this process was getting the lights set up as we struggled to get it the lights on the stand. Secondly, we had a few issues with making are video under 2 minutes while still having three different shots from each perspective but in the end were able to figure it out.

I personally feel like are interview questions were very thought out and well put together as we got a lot of interesting information out of Skyler which really helped make it easier putting together our clips. As well I thought we did an excellent job with the lighting in the room as it was very clear and focused on Skyler which I feel like really helped make our interview awesome.

One unforeseen circumstance that came up on us was that some of the plug ins did not work so we had to adapt and rearrange are setup to a position that would have enough plug ins for us to use.

The one thing I wish we done differently was to possibly have more action in our background as I thought re background was solid but wasn’t excellent so that would be the one thing I wish we would of done differently.

The assignment that me and Will were assigned was to get three shots with three different scenes that will tell a story in a visually compelling way.

The strategies that Will and I came up with was to figure out what ideas we wanted to do first with our scenes and then come up with a plan on how we want to share these. As well we came up with the plan of rehearsal before shooting to make sure we would be all set once we went to the camera.

The initial ideas that we came up with for the shoot was the basketball free throw one and doing something with cards.

The inspiration we got from this was to involve some of my friends and do a poker hand which I thought would bring some appeal to the scene.

The two initial ideas that we decided to move on from were the free throw one and the poker hand one. We decided to add the library one after these ideas were thought of. Our project outline that we followed was started by figuring out what we wanted our scenes to look like as we felt that was an important starting point for us. After that we put our focus in figuring out the timing and rehearsal part as that gave us the ability to see what our scene would look like. After this step we filmed our scenes multiple times so we would have different options when it came to the point of editing. The following Tuesday we edited our footage and redid our library film as we felt it wasn’t up to par compared to are others. We would return to edit this one again and were done all three scenes.

We would end up relying on a few teammates of mine for help with acting out in the poker scene but besides that we did not need anyone else’s help.

The challenges that we faced were setting up the camera and using some of the features on the camera but were able to figure it out after some time. I also felt like we struggled with getting different views at times with our shots and will look to do better on that moving forward.

I felt like our editing portion went very well as well as our scene ideas as I felt they were very interesting scenes.

The one unforeseen circumstance that we faced was that some of our editing clips didn’t save so we had to go back and do those over for a couple scenes.

The one thing that I would have done differently was to possibly use the outdoors for one of our clips because nature adds some levels to the clips I feel.

Overall I was very proud of Will and I work as I thought we created some very cool and interesting clips as well as learned some new information which will be very helpful moving forward!

From Anmore, British Columbia

I am a communication undeclared major with a lot of interest in Journalism and media studies as a possible major. My interest in life is to possibly be a sport talk show host as well a commentator career is something that truly intrigues me.  My interest right now in my life is to hopefully one day play in the NHL as that has been a goal of mine my whole life and is something that I have worked for my entire life. I personally am involved with the Men’s Ice Hockey Team as a forward on that team. This is something that takes a great amount of time out of my day and is something that I am super dedicated too. I understand that I am representing Bobcat nation on the ice surface and put my best foot forward every day. My career aspirations are too play in the NHL and hopefully after my career is over to host a sports talk show or be a hockey play by play commentator. A big aspiration for me is too stay in the sport world for the rest of my life and that starts with having a great on ice career. The reason behind me taking this course is it will hopefully give me a great introduction to what journalism is all about and some key skills that you will need to have to be successful in the journalism world. As well I believe working with cameras and making and editing videos is a skill that will help me with anything that I decide to do in life. Lastly the opportunity to create truly is something that I love and enjoy learning about and in this course one of the biggest things that I hope to get out of are building skills to create videos, photos and projects. The ways that I hope to grow through this course is the ability to work with partners and groups as that is such an important skill to have in life. As well I hope my ability with electronics improve as in 2020 electronics are becoming such a key part to daily activity and is something that is used in almost all jobs so improving my work with electronics is something that is very important. Overall, I cannot wait to get this class going and can easily say this is the most excited I have been for a class in my college career and will not take any day for granted because that is what Kobe would have done.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
